Rational Richard Shelby to Flip-Flop?

Everyone’s been so quick and cute to point out…
“Recent Nobel Prize winning economist, Peter Diamond, a professor at MIT, is not qualified to serve on the board of governors for the Federal Reserve, says U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Alabama). Diamond is an authority on taxation, Social Security, pensions, Medicare, labor markets and behavioral economics—one of his students was Ben Bernanke.”

Ouch.  Peter, I feel your pain

But seriously, Peter, you should not be upset.  After all, Richard Shelby would never act sheerly out of self interest or spite.  No way, he would never.

Oh, wait…November 9, 1994: Richard Shelby switches his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican, one day after the Republicans won control of both houses in the midterm elections.

On the bright side for Peter Diamond, this indicates that Richard Shelby is technically “rational” and now, with Diamond’s prize in hand, Shelby should flip-flop and vote to confirm the now qualified prize winning economist.

  1. I don’t trust Richard Shelby any further than Jeff Sessions’ ears are wide.

  2. Slightly off-topic…

Why would Shelby switch parties AFTER the election? He caucused with the Republicans but, at the time occasionally ,broke the party line on…odd…votes.
